Draco Nocturne
Prismacolor pencils and acrylic on black foamcore

This is the first in a group of images inspired by the words "dark gothic dragon art" (prints and other merchandise available!: http://www.cafepress.com/darkgothdragons and http://www.e-shirt.com/MyShop.asp?ShopID=3380). Some ancient myths held that a god or godlike monster swallowed the sun every night. Here the Dragon of Night spreads his starry wings and Milky Way belly over the evening sky, taking the sun away in his claws like a precious jewel.
I always like dragons that are not portrayed as beastly and ugly nor cute and comical. They are beautiful and clearly brilliant of mind, yet also forces of elemental power not to be toyed with or treated like ordinary animals.
